Beard oil, beard balm, or beard foam: what do you need?
Growing a beard is easy, but keeping it looking good requires a bit more effort. Coarse hairs, itching and flakes underneath, or a beard that sticks out in all directions: most beard problems can be solved with the right care. But which product do you need?
On this page, we explain what beard oil, beard balm, and beard foam do, how they differ, which one suits your beard, and how to apply them.
Why does a beard need care?
Beard hair is thicker and coarser than the hair on your head. The skin underneath does produce sebum, but it only partially reaches the lengths of your beard. As a result, the beard dries out faster and feels rough.
The skin under the beard also dries out easily, especially due to washing, cold, and heating. You will notice this as itching and flakes, especially with a beard that is just starting to grow.
Three products, three tasks
- Beard oil: cares for the beard hairs and the skin underneath. Softens the beard, adds shine, and helps against a dry, tight feeling. Provides no hold
- Beard balm: also provides care, but contains wax and butter. This gives it hold: stray hairs stay in place and your beard keeps its shape
- Beard foam: a light, airy treatment for beard, mustache, and the skin underneath that you let soak in: a leave-in, not shaving foam. Absorbs quickly, doesn't feel greasy, and is easy to distribute
Which one suits your beard?
- Stubble or a short beard: beard oil or beard foam, especially for the skin underneath
- Medium or long beard: beard oil for softness, possibly supplemented with balm for shape
- A beard that sticks out in all directions: beard balm
- Itching or flakes under the beard: beard oil or beard foam, daily, massaged into the skin
- You don't like a greasy feeling: beard foam

How do you apply it?
Beard oil, step by step:
- Wash your beard and pat it towel-dry; slightly damp hair absorbs the oil best
- Put a few drops in your palm, 2 to 3 for a short beard, slightly more for a long beard
- Rub your hands together and massage the oil into the skin
- Work from the root to the tips and comb through your beard
Beard balm: take a small amount, rub it warm between your palms until it melts, and distribute it through your beard. Then style it with your fingers or a comb.
Beard foam: pump a small amount into your hand and massage it into the washed, towel-dried beard and mustache, down to the skin. Do not rinse out.
Oil and balm? That works: first a few drops of oil for care, then the balm for shape.
What can you expect?
Realistic expectations are important. This is what you will notice:
- Immediately: a softer beard that combs better and looks well-groomed
- After a few days: less itching and a less tight feeling under the beard
- Long term: with daily use, your beard remains supple and in shape; a care product does not make your beard fuller or grow faster
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between beard oil and beard balm?
Beard oil cares for and softens your beard without hold. Beard balm also provides care, but with wax and butter, it also keeps your beard in shape.
How often should I use beard oil?
Daily, preferably after washing or showering. If you have dry skin, you can use it again in the evening.
Can I use beard oil for a short beard or stubble?
Yes. In that case, the oil especially cares for the skin underneath, which helps against itching while growing it out.
Will my beard become greasy from beard oil?
Not if you use the right amount. Start with a few drops and massage in well. If you prefer a lighter feel, choose beard foam.
Can I also use LaQ oil for my face?
Yes. LaQ Face 'n' Beard Oil is made for both face and beard, and you can also use it before and after shaving.
Does beard oil make my beard grow faster?
No. Beard oil cares for the beard and the skin underneath, making your beard look fuller and better groomed, but it does not make it grow faster.
I have sensitive skin. What should I look out for?
The fragrance in beard products contains natural scents that can irritate sensitive skin. Test a new product on a small patch of skin first.
