Coloring shampoo for grey hair: what is it and how do you use it?
Gray hairs at your temples, in your beard, or scattered throughout your hair, and no desire for an appointment at the salon or a complicated dye job? With a coloring shampoo, you can color your hair at home in a single treatment that takes just a few minutes.
On this page, we explain what Men's Master Coloring Shampoo is, how it works, how to apply it, which color to choose, and what you can realistically expect.
What is a coloring shampoo?
Men's Master Coloring Shampoo is hair dye in the form of a shampoo. You apply and massage it in just like a regular shampoo, but after letting it sit for 5 minutes, your gray hair will be colored deep black or dark brown.
It comes in two colors: Black (MM 22) and Brown (MM 23). Each box contains 10 sachets of 25 ml, so you use the exact right amount per treatment. The formula contains hemp oil, which nourishes your hair while coloring.
How does it work?
The Coloring Shampoo is an oxidative hair color, just like most hair dyes at the salon. The formula consists of a colorant part with dyes and a developer with hydrogen peroxide. Together, they activate the color: the pigments penetrate the hair and react to produce color. This allows it to cover gray hair in a single treatment, rather than gradually.
Everything is contained in one sachet, so there is no need to measure or mix anything separately. Only open the sachet right before use, use the entire contents immediately, and do not save any leftovers for later.
Step-by-step:
- Perform an allergy test 48 hours in advance, even if you have used the product before.
- Put on gloves (not included) and protect your clothing.
- Open a sachet and apply the contents directly to dry or damp hair.
- Massage until the shampoo is well distributed everywhere.
- Leave on for 5 minutes; for stubborn gray hair or for a more intense color, you can extend this to 15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with water until it runs clear.
For short hair, 1 sachet is enough. For longer hair, you sometimes need 2.
Black or brown: which color do you choose?
- Black (MM 22): for those with naturally black or very dark hair.
- Brown (MM 23): for those with naturally brown hair.
Choose the color closest to your natural hair color. If you are in doubt between the two, choose brown: a slightly lighter color looks more natural than one that is too dark. When using it for the first time, test the color on a small, inconspicuous lock of hair.
Coloring Shampoo or Repigmenting Shampoo?
Men's Master has two shampoos against gray hair that work in very different ways:
- Coloring Shampoo (MM 22/23): single treatment, immediate result. An oxidative color that turns gray hair black or brown in 5 minutes and remains visible for up to 4 weeks. A 48-hour allergy test beforehand is mandatory.
- Repigmenting Shampoo (MM 09): gradual result. You use it in the shower instead of your regular shampoo, and the color builds up with every wash. You will see a clear difference after 2 to 4 weeks. Read more in our explanation about repigmenting shampoo.
If you want to get rid of your gray all at once, choose the Coloring Shampoo. If you want to make the gray disappear slowly and subtly, choose the Repigmenting Shampoo.
Who is it suitable for?
Men's Master Coloring Shampoo works best if:
- You want to color gray hair in one treatment.
- You have naturally black or brown hair.
- You have full or partial gray hair.
- You want to color your head hair, beard, or mustache.
It is suitable for men and women and for all hair types. Do not use if under 16 years of age, do not use on eyelashes or eyebrows, and do not use if you have a sensitive, irritated, or damaged scalp or have previously had a reaction to hair dye or a temporary "black henna" tattoo.
What can you expect?
Realistic expectations are important. Here is what you will notice:
- Immediately after the treatment: gray hair is colored deep black or dark brown.
- The weeks following: the color fades gradually with every wash and remains visible for up to 4 weeks on average; slightly shorter on beards and mustaches.
- Long term: you repeat the treatment when the gray becomes visible again, each time with a new 48-hour allergy test beforehand.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the color last?
On average up to 4 weeks, depending on your hair type and how often you wash it. The color fades gradually with every wash.
Can I also use it on my beard or mustache?
Yes. Even then, perform the 48-hour allergy test first. The color will last slightly less time on the beard and mustache than on head hair. Do not use it for eyelashes or eyebrows.
Why do I have to do an allergy test every time?
The Coloring Shampoo contains oxidative dyes, including phenylenediamines. You can develop a sensitivity to these even after previous problem-free use. The 48-hour test is therefore necessary for every treatment.
Can I repeat the treatment immediately if the color is too light?
No. Do not repeat the treatment immediately. If you want a more intense color, let it sit longer during the next treatment, up to a maximum of 15 minutes.
Can I use it on bleached or colored hair?
Yes, but the result may differ. Test the color on a small lock of hair first.
Does it also cover a few stray gray hairs?
Yes. It covers both full and partial gray hair.
Are gloves included?
No. Always use gloves to prevent stains on your hands and to protect your skin.
Is this the same as the Repigmenting Shampoo?
No. The Coloring Shampoo colors in a single treatment. You use the Repigmenting Shampoo with every wash to make the gray disappear gradually.
