Color-depositing conditioner: what is it and how does it work?
A few weeks after dyeing your hair, your color is duller than on the day you had it done. Your roots are becoming visible, but a full dye job isn't necessary yet. Or perhaps you simply want to try a different shade without committing to it for months. A coloring conditioner is an easy intermediate step.
On this page, we explain what Leganza Coloring Conditioner is, how it works, which shade to choose, and what you can realistically expect.
What is a coloring conditioner?
You use Leganza Coloring Conditioner like a regular conditioner, after washing your hair. The difference: it contains color pigments. These are dissolved in a base of 7 natural oils: argan, avocado, macadamia, jojoba, olive, almond, and shea.
What it does NOT contain: no ammonia, no PPD, and no hydrogen peroxide. So, there is no need to mix anything, and no developer is involved.
How does it work?
Permanent hair dye uses ammonia to open the outer layer of your hair, after which hydrogen peroxide allows small color molecules to react inside the hair, forming large ones that cannot escape. This provides a lasting color but stresses the hair with every dyeing session.
A coloring conditioner works without that chemical reaction. The color comes from direct dyes that attach to the hair without breaking open the hair structure. As a result, the color gradually washes out. There is no bleaching effect: it will not make your hair lighter.
Step by step:
- Perform a sensitivity test 24 hours in advance on a spot in your elbow crease cleaned with alcohol, and test the color on a single strand
- Wash your hair and towel-dry it so it is clean and still slightly damp
- Put on gloves, protect your clothing, and apply a greasy cream to your hairline and ears so your skin doesn't get stained
- Distribute the conditioner evenly through your hair
- Leave it on according to the time for your specific shade on the packaging
- Rinse thoroughly with water until it runs clear
Which shade should you choose, and how long should you leave it on?
Leganza Coloring Conditioner is available in 16 shades:
- Brown and black: 20 Black Tulip, 30 Light Brown, 31 Bitter Chocolate, 32 Chestnut, 71 Café Latte
- Copper, red, and violet: 40 Copper Titian, 50 Bordeaux, 51 Dark Morello Cherry, 52 Aubergine, 60 Rubious, 61 Dark Mahogany
- Blonde: 90 Platinum Blonde, 91 Pearl, 92 Silver Blonde, 93 Cool Blonde, 94 Ash Blonde
The processing time varies significantly per shade and desired intensity: from a few minutes for the blonde shades to 60 to 120 minutes for the darkest colors. The longer you leave it on, or the more often you use it, the more intense the result will be. The exact times per shade are listed on the packaging.
Who is it for?
Leganza Coloring Conditioner works best if:
- You want to refresh your color between dye jobs
- You want to touch up your roots without dyeing your whole head again
- You want to try out a new shade without the permanent nature of standard hair dye
- You want to keep your colored hair looking fresh and vibrant for longer
- You are looking for a color treatment without ammonia, PPD, and peroxide
The result is most pronounced on blonde and light hair. On dark hair, the color shows up more subtly. For gray hair, the manufacturer indicates up to 70 to 80% coverage, but gray hair absorbs color differently and may result in a slightly less intense effect. Therefore, always test on a single strand first.
What can you expect?
Realistic expectations are important. Here is what you will notice:
- Immediately after use: a visibly refreshed or new shade, strongest on light hair
- In the days following: the color remains visible for 3 to 8 washes and then fades gradually
- Long-term: you repeat the treatment whenever your color needs a refresh; with repeated use, the result becomes more intense

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the color last?
3 to 8 washes, depending on your hair type and care routine. After that, the color fades gradually, without a harsh regrowth line.
Does it damage my hair?
No. It contains nothing that breaks open the hair structure, and the nourishing oils actually condition your hair while coloring.
Can I use it to lighten my hair?
No. There is no bleaching effect. The result is strongest on blonde and light hair; on dark hair, the color shows up more subtly.
Does it cover gray hair?
The manufacturer indicates up to 70 to 80% gray coverage. Gray hair does absorb color differently, so perform a strand test first.
How do I get a more intense color?
Leave the conditioner on for longer or repeat the treatment. The longer or more often you use it, the more intense the color becomes.
Can I remove the color with a color remover?
That is not necessary and would not be effective: color removers are made for permanent dye. Leganza Coloring Conditioner fades on its own.
What if my skin or towel gets stained?
Apply a greasy cream to your hairline and ears beforehand and rinse off any skin contact immediately. Use an old towel the first time, just to be safe.
Why are there more dyes listed in the ingredients than in my specific shade?
The base formula with the 7 natural oils is the same for all 16 shades. The dyes listed after '+/-' may be present, depending on the shade you choose. The exact composition of your shade is listed on the packaging.
